Despite good preparation, you might occasionally find yourself running out of time in a section. Having a clear emergency strategy for these situations is essential and can prevent panic from making things worse.

If you are running out of time:

  • Don’t panic. Keep breathing. Take a moment to steel your nerves.
  • Switch immediately to emergency mode and follow your prepared strategy.
  • Keep an eye on the clock to ensure you click answers for every question before the final second.

Your priority: Answer every question while you can, using partial work or guesses.

If you’re running out of time, take immediate control and dramatically tighten your pacing. This means answering all remaining questions in half your usual time per question.

Focus on rapid elimination of obviously incorrect answers rather than trying to prove which answer is definitely correct. Often you can eliminate two or three answers quickly, improving your odds significantly.

A good guess on all remaining questions is better than leaving some of them blank.

When time is critically short, eliminate answers with the absolute minimum working or calculation. Skip detailed calculations and complex reasoning in favour of quick, strategic decisions.

Make speedy, educated guesses where you can, even on the toughest questions. As time runs out, a question that requires huge effort is the least valuable.

Take the biggest shortcuts – with your most rushed answers – on the hardest questions. A rushed answer is infinitely better than no answer at all.

To execute emergency strategies effectively, stay calm and focused. Panic makes you slower and more likely to make careless errors that waste precious time.

Emergency mode will go quickly – make the most of it to maximise your marks before the clock runs out. Every answered question gives you a chance of marks, while blank answers guarantee zero marks.

Remember, you’ll get a mini-break when it’s time to read the instructions for the next section. Use that time to rest your eyes, relax your breathing and return to ‘normal mode’.
